Central to the treatment provided at our Clinic is the recognition that the body responds to injuries of all types (accident, postural distortion, or repetitive strain) and in all regions in the same way—inflammation followed by adhesion (scar tissue) formation. The scar tissue may be of poor quality and/or there may be too much of it. In any case the result is the same: the pain either doesn’t go away (or if it does it quickly comes back) OR the scar tissue forces injury to occur elsewhere and the same process begins in a new location.
Common examples of this include:
- Lower back pain with or without sciatica
- Neck and upper back pain with or without arm symptoms and headache
- Carpal tunnel syndrome and other repetitive stress injuries
- Sports injuries anywhere in the body
- Osteoarthritis and spinal stenosis
- Disc problems
MOTION stimulates weak and inadequate scar tissue to transition into a strong and lasting repair and prevents reinjury by reducing excessive adhesion formation. Determining what the type of injury you have (and how to best mobilize it) is one of the primary purposes of your initial examination.
Motion is NOT produced by rest, pills, injections or surgery and is only marginally improved by self-performed exercise.
I have learned that a mixture of treatment methods (directed to the spine and to the extremities) yields better results than just one particular method of care for every condition.
- Chiropractic adjustments work best for most spinal injuries. We offer traditional hands-on methods along with the newer low-force (Neuromechanical Impulse) techniques. This is especially helpful with patients who are in significant pain, have osteoporosis or simply don't do well with "popping and snapping" styles of care.
- A family of soft tissue treatments called myofascial release is more useful in conditions such as carpal tunnel and rotator cuff syndromes
- A powerful technique called lumbopelvic decompression is very effective in sciatic problems including disc injuries and spinal stenosis.
- A special interest here at the Clinic is in rehabilitation. It takes different forms depending on the type and location of injury but the focus is always the same—teaching each patient how to avoid recurrence of their problem and then showing him or her how to improve the strength and stability of the affected region so they are more resistant to new injury.
This two step treatment system (the healing effect of appropriate mobilization followed by the injury avoidance and strength/stability benefit of rehabilitation) has been shown to be THE MOST EFFECTIVE TREATMENT for the conditions listed above. Scientific comparison studies have repeatedly demonstrated its superiority to rest, medication, steroid injections, physical therapy and acupuncture—both in the short and long term.
